UNEF I UN EMERGENCY FORCE ( EGYPT )

Established in November 1956 to secure and to supervise the cessation of hostilities, including the withdrawal of the armed forces of France, Israel and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland from Egyptian territory, and after the withdrawal, to serve as a buffer between the Egyptian and Israeli Forces. The Mission was terminated at the request of Egypt in June 1967.

The following countries provided troops to this Mission: Brazil, Canada, Columbia, Denmark, Finland, Indochina, India, Norway, Sweden and Yugoslavia.



UNEF MEDAL

The ribbon has a background of a sand or buff colour symbolizing the Sinai with a wide centre band of UN blue. Two thin lines in dark blue and green appear at either end of the ribbon, the blue representing the Suez Canal, and the green, the Nile Valley. Ninety days of service in the Mission was necessary to qualify for award of the medal.

At the time the B-17s were the aircraft with the largest range available to the FAB. Thus they were assigned to support the IIIº/2º Regimento de Infantaria - "Batalhão Suez", the Brazilian Army component of the United Nations Emergency Force, based at Gaza Strip (Egypt-Israel border). Between March 1957 and May 1960, 24 trips were performed, with the B-17s from 6º GAV running the monthly CAN service to that part of the globe

THE END OF UNEF I

In 1966, U Thant appointed Rikhye commander of UNEF. After a situation analysis, Rikhye had reached "the unhappy conclusion that the Arabs and Israelis were hurtling toward a serious crisis". Though it was beyond his brief, he apprised U Thant and Ralph Bunche of the omens, but his report was ignored. By May 1967, Nasser moved armed troops into the Sinai and Egypt demanded an end of UNEF presence. As the Sinai was being overrun by Egypt, Israeli air force jets attempted to hijack Rikhye's UN plane by mistake. The Israeli defense forces went on to attack UNEF in Gaza and Rafah, killing and imprisoning UN staff and looting UN stocks. UNEF II UN EMERGENCY FORCE ( EGYPT )

Authorized 25 October 1973. Mandate: To supervise the cease- fire between Egyptian and Israeli Forces following the 18 January 1974 and 8 September 1974 agreements and to supervise the redeployment of both Egyptian and Israeli Forces, man and control the buffer zone. Ceased operations 24 July 1979. UN costs were $446,487,000.
